JosiDavisJosi Davis is an award-winning, New England based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Her love-soaked and jazz-like approach to repertoire incorporates blues, rock, funk, and R & B elements, powerful originals and saucy interpretations of contemporary and traditional favorites that keep her listeners captivated.

Josi is a radiant performer, an imaginative instructor at String Theory School of Music, and a tireless musician, involved in several projects supporting and attracting the best artists with her work. Josi works as the female lead vocalist for veteran New England dance band Rock and Soul Revue, and with various players in duo and trio groups, and as Josi Davis & Hot Damn! She was a Mark Fusco Scholar at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s Cabaret and Performance Conference and attributes her experience there to her discovery of a perfect fusion of music and theater as art. The original soundtrack to her nouveau cabaret, THE EVOLUTION OF LOVE, was recorded and released as her first solo album. Josi is now a featured writing artist with Hook River Music Company. She is currently in the studio working on her sophomore release.

Josi was nominated for Best Album in the 2014 Connecticut Music Awards, and for four 2014 Whalie Awards for THE EVOLUTION OF LOVE. She was a 2013 Whalie Award winner for Best Solo Singer/Songwriter Performance winner for “Ivy Grows”, and won the first ever BETSY award for her performance of her original “Believe”. Josi has performed at the Boston Folk Festival, the New York Singer/Songwriter Festival, among others, and was a featured performer at the 1st Annual Mystic Blues Festival. She now serves on the Mystic Blues Festival’s Advisory Board as Chair of the Education Committee and Student Performance Stage coordinator.

Dennis Fancher is known for switching effortlessly between styles, Dennis has played with a diverse group of artists including James Montgomery, Jaimoe and Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers, Mike Gordon, Max Creek, Andy Aledort, Gordon Stone, and the late, Texas Blues great U.P. Wilson.

Review: Beneath the Rafters of the Barn, Steak and Seafood

Entering a new restaurant, you react to certain details semi consciously, décor features that skew your affections one way or another. The first thing I noticed at the Barn was the colored lights. Backlit areas glowed pink, yellow or green; a wooden lattice enclosed false marble panels that were lighted a luminous aqua from within. Wild, Gorgon-like chandeliers glimmered blue and yellow overhead. There was a vaguely disco-like quality to it all. Uh-oh, I thought.

My initial wariness proved unfounded. The Barn gives off a curious mishmash of signals: located in a renovated carriage house, it’s both rustic and contemporary, family-friendly and romantic, all at once. Yet somehow — don’t ask me how — it works. The restaurant, which opened in September, combines the talents of James Chen, a co-owner (along with his wife, Sandy Gao), whose three previous restaurants include the nearby Han Asian Cuisine, and its chef, Dan Fortin, formerly of the Infinity Hall bistros in Norfolk and Hartford. The Barn’s kitchen embellishes a primarily steak-and-seafood menu with eclectic Mediterranean and Asian touches. The results thoroughly satisfy.
